Experiential Learning Startup Besomebody to Appear on "Shark Tank"
Boston, Mass. (October 27, 2016) – Besomebody, a worldwide motivational movement turned Experience Marketplace, will be featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank” on Friday, November 4th 2016. The #besomebody app enables users to learn anything they are passionate about by booking experiences with talented people around them. Users book experiences on the app, and then meet up in person for hands-on, peer-to-peer learning. The hosts of the experiences, called Passionaries, get paid to teach what they love. The app was Beta tested in Austin, Texas in 2015, and has begun to scale nationally this year.
Besomebody began as the personal mantra and blog of founder, Kash Shaikh. He started sharing the motivational hashtag in 2009, and created the #besomebody blog in 2011 while working as a marketing leader at Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble. In 2013, after a successful stint at camera maker GoPro as the company’s first Senior Director of Social Marketing and Communications, Shaikh set off on an international journey to build the #besomebody movement and brand. Today, #besomebody content and events reach more than 10 million people in 180 countries. The company’s app has been available for a little over a year.
While early stage apps and technology platforms are rare sights – and even rarer successes – on the award-winning reality television series, Shaikh says the appearance alone is valuable. The show has a primetime audience of nearly six million viewers and a strong global following. The appearance also puts Besomebody in exclusive company: less than 1% of applicants actually make it to pitch the sharks.
“No matter what happens in the “The Tank”, we’ve come a long, long way thanks to our passionate community around the world,” Shaikh said. “Together we’ve taken a small idea with a big vision, and propelled it to a global stage. We’re excited to share the #besomebody app to millions of “Shark Tank” fans, and to continue to do our part to help people everywhere live their passion.”
In one year, Austin Passionaries made nearly $100,000 hosting experiences across the city. Users got to learn and enjoy themselves in over 400 different passion areas, encompassing all forms of art, athletics, entrepreneurship and adventure. The app has received numerous awards and endorsements, including being named “One of the Apps that Might Take Over Facebook” by Entrepreneur.
The company has since relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, expanding its footprint in the Northeast and focusing new product development within the area’s world-class academic landscape.
“We learned a lot during our beta launch, and we’ve kept the things that people loved and changed the things that needed more work,” Shaikh said. “Now, we’re excited to watch this marketplace grow. Sharing our app – and our story – on “Shark Tank” will be another great milestone on this journey.”
The company’s appearance on “Shark Tank” was filmed months ago, as is typically the case with the show. Since then, Besomebody has been quietly working on a new product that goes beyond one-off experiences and focuses on employment-driven learning. This will come to life through a series of vocational training paths that give people the skills they need to get jobs in growing industries.
“We’re creating a new path for learning that works backwards, starting with open jobs and the skills needed to fill them,” Shaikh said. “Candidates will be able to choose from a series of Paths in industries such as Food & Hospitality, Health Care, Energy and Automotive. We are building upon everything we learned about peer-to-peer and expert-led instruction, and applying it to a much bigger problem. We’re going to help get unemployed and underemployed people jobs in industries they love.”
Shaikh says the Besomebody Paths will replace current options for post-secondary education and training, saving people money and guaranteeing them a job with partner employers. The new Path product launches to the public in early 2017.
But for now, the Sharks – and millions of viewers at home – get to learn about the first piece of the growing Besomebody vision.
“It was an awesome experience to meet the Sharks and be on one of the most popular reality TV shows,” Shaikh said. “We are so grateful for everyone’s support, through the ups, downs and every space and place in between. It means so much to us, and it’s the reason we do what we do.”
